The Resilient Way – Disconnect to Reconnect

We are all busy. Although technology helps to make many tasks easier – domestic appliances, computers, the internet etc., it also means that we are able to do more and so we do!. In fact, it often feels that there is never enough time. For every task we tick off our ‘to do’ list, there are another 2 or 3 things to be added.

Disconnected From Self

When our life is so busy it’s easy to get lost in our day to day activities as we focus on our work, relationships and chores and forget to engage fully with ourselves. We can find ourselves functioning on ‘autopilot’ with little consideration or regard for our own health, happiness and sense of purpose

Re-boot

If you regularly use a computer or laptop, I’m sure you will have experienced those times when they stop working as efficiently as they should. It’s frustrating because things take longer, or need to be repeated and sometimes the whole thing freezes and nothing works.

Often the best solution is to reboot the system. Essentially, this means disconnecting everything, waiting a few moments and then loading the system up again. Although it means a temporary disruption to work, it’s worth it because when the system starts up again, it works like a dream.

People seem to be like computers. We are skilled and capable but when we try to do too much for too long we can become overwhelmed and consequently less efficient. Just as we re-boot our computers, we need to do the same for ourselves.

Unplug

The Resilient Way is to completely disconnect, and ‘unplug’ ourselves from the treadmill of routine. In this way, we can discover how to recover, reconnect and continue in a way that makes us feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

Take notice

When things start to become a struggle, particularly things that used to be easy, take it as a sign you need to stop for a while and reassess. Although it can feel counterintuitive to stop when you know you have so much to do, like the computer it can actually save you time and energy in the long term.
